The UK and US have hammered out a landmark commercial pact that will maintain no tariffs on UK medicine shipments going into the American market.

The Terms of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to increase funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This move secures that tariffs on these key products will be held at zero for a timeframe of 36 months.

This development is in response to previous statements to dramatically increase import taxes on branded drug products, with potential rates floated as high as double the cost.

"This arrangement between the Britain strengthens the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and brings much-needed fairness to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a statement said.

Economic Importance

Drugs are one of the Britain's biggest exports to the US, which is easily the largest buyer for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics reveal that in the 12 months leading up to last September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products totaling £11.1bn to the US. This amount made up a significant portion of British export trade in that period.

"This deal protects work, increases investment and facilitates the UK to become a international leader for medical research," a government official commented.

Detailed British Pledges

The pact entails several notable changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it considers new treatments to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to double overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be limited at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates exceeded twenty percent.

Industry Background

This agreement comes amid a protracted row between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.

The disagreement were exacerbated by claims that US customers were paying significantly more for the same drugs than patients in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been paused or abandoned, while major funding commitments have been announced toward US facilities.

One official acknowledged that the NHS needed to increase expenditure on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the past decade.
