Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
