A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January rose in the period preceding former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on Monday would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
